Why are we so confident that our 'Jesus + nothing' beliefs are all we need?
In Colossians 2, we have already learned that we now have the closest relationship with God possible because of the Holy Spirit living inside of us (2:10). We also learned that we have been given a new heart by the Holy Spirit to truly know and love God (2:11).
Colossians 2:12-13 gives us one more reason that we have confidence: we have been baptized by the Holy Spirit!
Please take a few minutes to read through this week's text and answer the questions as we prepare our minds for worship.
Colossians 2:8–16 "See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. 9 For in Christ the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10 and you have been filled in Christ, who is the head of all rule and authority. 11 In Christ also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised with Him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised Christ from the dead. 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This God set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 God disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in Him. 16 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you"
1) 2:11-12 are one sentence describing two related things that both happened at the same time (circumcision and baptism). What connections do you see between 2:11 and 2:12?
2) What are the results of being baptized by the Holy Spirit in 2:12?
3) How does the dead / alive truth of 2:13 help us to understand the more difficult concepts in 2:12?
