Colossians 2 tells us to stay close and also to be careful because there are people who want to steal us away from Christ.
We learned last time, to beware of godless lovers of wisdom. These "philosophers and empty deceivers" will try to kill our faith by causing us doubt God, His Word or His church.
This week, Paul warns us about a second kind of deceiver who wants to kidnap us and kill our faith.
Please take a few minutes to read through this week's text and answer the questions as we prepare our minds for worship.
"Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. 8 See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elementary principles of the world, and not according to Christ...
20 If with Christ you died to the elementary principles of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations— 21 “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” 22 (referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to human precepts and teachings? 23 These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh."
1) The legalistic rule based religion of Paul's day was Judaism. What forms of rule based religion do we see today promising that, if we follow their rules, we will be acceptable to God?
2) How does rule based religion conflict with what you know about Christ and the gospel?
3) What is wrong with religion that tries to use strict rules to create righteousness in 2:23?
