Last week, we received a warning to not let anyone take us captive by causing us to doubt the identity of Christ or the sufficiency of His sacrifice. Our acceptance by God has been 100% secured by Jesus. On this truth we stand. But there are false teachers of every flavor who will try to convince us that we must follow their man-made rules, if we want to be acceptable to God. Regarding these lairs, Colossians says "Let no one take you captive" and "Let know one judge you".
But why are we so confident that our 'Jesus + nothing' beliefs are all we need?
Please take a few minutes to read through this week's text and answer the questions as we prepare our minds for worship.
"See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. 9 For in Christ the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10 and you have been filled in Christ, who is the head of all rule and authority. 11 In Christ also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised with Him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised Christ from the dead. 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This God set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 God disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in Him. 16 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you"
1) Is that a hard passage to understand?
2) What is the simple "once dead but now alive" truth in 2:13?
3) How does the death / life truth of 2:13 help us to understand the more difficult concepts
